MADNESS

March growing up in Connecticut & being a UConn alumna means madness – MARCH MADNESS. A month full of fun, excitement, powerful women, & the coming of spring. But there is even more madness in March. As a March baby, I know the month is unpredictable. In New England, we can experience anything from blizzards to summer weather. This unpredictability can be maddening. But it reminds us to embrace the dynamic energy of the world around us & even within us!

The month starts with a Weezer classic, Sweet Dreams, as we prepare for a month full of adventure & time well spent with friends. The tone continues with Midnight City by M83, perfect for a long drive home after beer & fire pits with tons of laughs.

Music continued to flow through this month with Waiting for Love by Avicii, which played over the grocery store speakers reminding me of some of my favorite summer nights (The Nights by Avicii).

As spring sprung, so did my alignment with beautiful, resonant, more spiritual music like W.A.Y.S. by Jhene Aiko, From Gold by Novo Amor, & Godspeed by Frank Ocean. (Jesus, Thou Art the Sinner’s Friend by the Indian Bottom Association also snuck in there because of my love of musicology, & to remind me of the roots of the music.)

I was so lucky that one weekend my family & I cozied in to watch the old Coming 2 America & the new coming to America. Some new favorite songs which came out of the new movie are Gett Off by Teyana Taylor, Jermaine Fowler, & Brandon Rogers, & Go Big by YG & Big Sean. And, I want to give extra attention to I’m A King by Bobby Sessions & Megan Thee Stallion, especially the lines:

Vision man obsessed, speakin’ to his truth.

Legacy, the story, we manifest who we wanna be.

These two lines remind us to move forward with a vision & that we create our own reality. Our thoughts lead to our actions which lead to our life.

The Thrill by Wiz Khalifa & Empire of the Sun & You Gotta Be by Huntertones & Melissa McMillan brought extra light to my life on a beautiful wind & sunny afternoon driving down to the shore to spend time with a great girlfriend!

Down with Sickness by Disturbed was blasting on my way to get my COVID-19 vaccine. Currently, it is one of my favorite songs, which is a little out of character for me. But I am welcoming the dynamic energy that exists within me & makes me a unique character in this life.

California Dreamin' by The Mamas & The Papas & You’ll Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties by Jona Lewie are two vibey songs from Amazon+ Prime’s new series Tell Me Your Secrets. If you like true crime check this one out!

We are about to step into a TV & movie song binge!  Little Runaway by Celeste welcomed us into the 2nd half of Grey’s Anatomy's 17th season! Wow, COVID twists & all!

Changing by Sigma & Paloma Faith is my favorite jam from the new Netflix show Zero Chill. Other notable songs are Here with Me by Marshmellow & CHVRCHES, Move Your Body by Xpansions, & 60 Minutes by Lester Franco & Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

The last movie I would like to highlight is Moxie on Netflix! After all, in March, we celebrate International Women’s Day & this movie shows just how powerful women can be when they stand together & build one another up! Join me in jamming out to songs like Rebel Girl by Bikini Kill, Kitana by Princess Nokia, & Alala by CSS. Some other girl-power songs that stood out to me on my road trips this month are Love So Soft by Kelly Clarkson, Bad Girls by M.I.A., (When You Gonna) Give It Up To Me by Sean Paul & Keyshia Cole, & Run This Town by JAY-Z, Rihanna, & Kanye West.

As a woman on my own I got it goin on.
— Give It Up To Me by Sean Paul

This month was about catching up with great people. I was lucky to grab a drink with an old friend who introduced me to Anna Begins by Counting Crows a long time ago. But also appreciates my taste in songs like Jackson Pollock by Andy Mineo, which I discovered on my way to say hi.

I would definitely recommend rolling your windows down & singing Tear in My Heart by Twenty One Pilots, Astronaut In The Ocean by Masked Wolf, & Achilles Heel by J. Maya as loud as possible!

Otherwise, Comeback Story by Kings of Leon feels like spring & reminds us how far we have come since last March. The final maddening thing I will mention, but I think is important to remember, is that year has passed since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have all lost something this last year, whether it was our normal flow or much more, but we are COMING BACK.

Masterpiece by Jessie J reminds us we all stumble & fall & are perfectly incomplete. But to keep working on yourself & growing.

Yellow by Coldplay has the classic lines, “Look at the stars, look how they shine for you, & everything you do. I love stepping out at night & looking up at the night sky. This last month the stars have been absolutely awesome & this song popped into my head… Along with thoughts of how wonderful it is that the Universe created us & the stars with the same energy. So, remember to take a moment to look up & remember how special you are to be in this world.

And, finally, I leave you with Shut Up & Dance by WALK THE MOON, which could be my life anthem!
